Vinylidene fluoride, an exceptional material

PVDF is a plastic material obtained by extrusion. It is chemically inert, and its resins come in the form of pellets for easy processing. Alternatively, it is available as a very fine powder used for solutions and additives. As with all fluorinated polymers, this material is highly resistant to chemical erosion. However, unlike PTFE (another technopolymer from the same family), it has superior mechanical resistance and does not undergo deformation under load.

And its positive features don’t end there. PVDF is also:

  • compatible with food regulations
  • non-toxic
  • very pure

In addition, it has a low coefficient of friction, making it suitable for use in bearings; it is also ideal for food-related environments. Finally, it offers good resistance to UV rays, ageing, radiation, weathering, and temperature variations between -30°C and +150°C.

As you can see, therefore, polyvinylidene fluoride is particularly well suited to applications that require resistance over time to both halogens and strong acids, even at high temperatures.

 

Applications of polyvinylidene fluoride

Given PVDF’s exceptional resistance, it has a wide variety of potential applications ranging from the injection moulding sector to coatings and to additives for the processing of polymers. More specifically, it is used in the following sectors:

  • manufacturing of components used in the chemical, nuclear, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, electrical and automotive industries;
  • monolayer and multilayer structures used for the production of beverages and fuels and for the transport of fluids in the pharmaceutical industry;
  • manufacturing of a wide variety of dispersion, solution and spray coatings for the architectural, automotive, industrial, pharmaceutical, and semiconductor manufacturing sectors;
  • production of blown and cast film, blow moulding, wire and cable coating, tube and fibre extrusion.
